Preset inactivity time-out. Most modem software will allow an option to time-out a connection if it is idle for a specified period of time. This option generally relies on a built-in feature of the modem.

Solution: Disable the inactivity time-out. This option is listed as "Disconnect the call if idle for..." under Start | Settings | Control Panel | Modems | Properties | Connection tab.

Call waiting break-ins. If you have call waiting on the phone line which your modem uses, the beep signaling an incoming call may cause the modem to drop its connection.

Solution: Disable call waiting by adding a disable code when dialing in (*70 under Bell Atlantic in Ithaca). You can add the disable code by going to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Modems | Properties | Connection. You will see "This location has call waiting. To disable it..." place *70,, in the box.

You may have a hardware conflict. Frequently we have seen internal modem cards configured in conflict with another COM port which will seem to work OK for a few minutes of the connection and then just freeze up. Check to see that your motherboard com2 port does not conflict with your modem, see your modem documentation for instructions on detecting and correcting IRQ conflicts. Also, if you have an Ethernet Card in your PC and an internal modem, it is almost certainly causing some problems with high speed modem connections.

    try this initial steps:
    -check cables if properly connected
    -check if outlet has dialtone
-change modulation settings of your modem (GDMT, MMODE)
-connect modem directly to wall(w/o filter, double adaptor, power surge protector)
-try different phone cable (preferably 3m long or less)
    -try different wall socket
-reset to factory defaults your modem and reconfigure
-do an isolation test (Connect modem directly to phone outlet using less than 3m phone cable, no filter, double adaptor, disconnect all phones and phone devices(back to base alarm, foxtell, pabx, commander, efpos?)
    -Upgrade firmware of modem
    -try different modem (if possible)

    • Have u tried to tuneup your modem manually?
    • What is your connection bandwidth?
    • goto start - settings - network connections - right klik to your connection - properties - options and find the "Idle time before hanging up".... the value must be "NEVER"
    • Try a speed test and see if the "UPLOAD" speed is normal
