he Net Send command can be used to send messages to the following users:
    • If user is activated.
    • If user is running Messenger Service on his local computer.
    • The user must be logged on to a computer and Messenger Service on local computer must be running in order to receive the message.

    hi,
The most likely issue based on your information appears to be something to do with firewall. If you have the firewall enabled on the desktop, you might not be able to ping it. To check, on your desktop machine goto start->Network Connections->Right click on your ethernet connection->Properties->Advanced tab->Settings. Here you can enable/disable/allow exceptions for that particular connection. If there is no firewall issue, it could be some problem with the router.

Re: Not able to Ping or net send

The Net Send command requires the Messenger Service to be enabled on remote computer.

You can use the following options with Net Send command:

    NET SEND {name | * | /DOMAIN[:name] | /USERS} message

name Is the username, computername, or messaging name to send the message to. If the name is a computername that contains blank characters, enclose the alias in quotation marks (" ").

/DOMAIN[:name] Sends the message to all the names in the workstation domain. If name is specified, the message is sent to all the names in the specified domain or workgroup.

/USERS Sends the message to all users connected to the server.

message Is text to be sent as a message.

Re: Not able to Ping or net send

Check the icmp settings of windows

    Start>>Run>>firewall.cpl>>Advanced>>Click "Settings" under ICMP

the only option that should be checked is "Allow incoming echo request", hope this helps
