From Dos to XP, I can imagine it, because I even make a boot disk. Conversely, I find nothing about this at the moment (which is not much). You could also have its own partition for the VM with DOS to make ... but it is probably overkill.

DOSBox requires a high computing power to run the emulated system to replicate the original speed. Depending on the used software are processors with clock frequencies in the gigahertz range is needed to initially for the 80486 - or Pentium-Family Programs written to run unnecessary. Remedy can use the recompile CPU core DOSBox create the program code directly from the processor of the host can perform, instead of individual commands in the software index. So far, this core but only for a few processor architectures available and is considered less sophisticated than the software version.
DOSBox eliminated because the program that the program is not running.

Do not know why it should not work? Try it, I have not, but definitely as VMWare offers the option instead of the VM to a file that is direct and real partition on the hard drive to make ...

To install DOS Virtual Machine Additions to an MS-DOS-based virtual machine, follow these steps:
    • Start the MS-DOS-based virtual machine, and permit it to finish starting.
    • In the host operating system, open the CD-ROM Drive Letter:\Additions folder.
    • Drag the Dos Virtual Machine Additions.vfd file from the CD-ROM Drive Letter:\Additions folder to the floppy disk icon in the lower left corner of the virtual machine window.
    • In the virtual machine window, type a:\dosadd.bat, and then press ENTER.
    • After the Dosadd.bat file has finished loading, you receive the following message:
    • You have successfully installed DOS Virtual Machine Additions. Please eject the DOS Virtual Machine Additions virtual floppy disk and restart the virtual machine.
    • Verify that the Config.sys file contains the following line:
    • LASTDRIVE=Z
    • If this line does not appear, edit the Config.sys file to add the line. This line allows Shared Folder functionality in the MS-DOS-based virtual machine.
