    Re: Latest Wireless Router

    Linksys WRT54GX Wireless Router:

If you want to cover your entire home in wireless broadband without having to buy repeaters, antennas, or any other extra equipment, the Linksys WRT54GX Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX belongs on your short list. Equipped with AirGo Networks' MIMO technology (Linksys calls it SRX, or Speed Range Expansion), the WRT54GX provides much greater coverage than any previous Linksys model. In fact, the router maintained a decent signal up to 1,500 feet away. It's not the fastest option, but the WRT54GX is nevertheless highly recommended.

The device's brushed-aluminum enclosure looks a bit sportier than most routers, especially once you rotate a tiny foot into position so you can stand the router vertically and raise the three thin antennas for the best broadcasting power.

There are no SRX-specific settings to configure on the router, so you can benefit from the technology right away. It dramatically improves throughput and coverage area by broadcasting two distinct 802.11g signals, sending and receiving them simultaneously.

In tests, the WRT54GX reached about 35 Mbps and dropped by only 5 Mbps beyond 50 feet. On the other hand, the signal was more erratic than the one supplied by the Belkin Pre-N router we tested, sometimes dropping to 20 Mbps. Still, the Linksys broadcast a strong signal all the way down a neighborhood block and up a hill for about 1,500 feet of coverage, maintaining an adequate 2 Mbps at that distance.

For the best throughput and coverage, the Linksys WPC54GX PC Card is required, although the router is backward-compatible with an 802.11b-equipped laptop. The PC Card uses an adaptive driver to throttle the router up to a 108 Mbps theoretical speed. If interference exists on the network, the driver will drop the speed down to the standard 54 Mbps. We had to force the router into 108 mode by changing a network properties setting in order to maintain the 35 Mbps speed at the 5-foot range.

Even an older Mac iBook laptop managed to connect and stay connected from over 500 feet away from the Linksys at a speed of about 1 to 2 Mbps. That's an important consideration for home users thinking of upgrading just the router and investing later in the MIMO-powered PC Cards for their laptops. MIMO does not even require a driver update for these older PCs to connect and access network resources.

The WRT54GX is a no-frills router that offers support for WPA or WEP encryption, and can operate as a DHCP server. The SPI firewall is nice, but most routers offer some sort of intrusion prevention these days. Unlike other routers, the WRT54GX does not provide any Internet filtering for controlling what sites the kids in your house can visit or for monitoring their Internet travels. (Linksys is working on a firmware update that does include a filter.)

Setup could be easier. The included wizard failed to recognize a cable modem connection, so we had to access the configuration screens directly by typing in the router's IP address in Internet Explorer.

The WRT54GX provides fast throughput and exceptional range. It's also worth mentioning that the WRT54GX extends its wireless reach about 200 feet farther than the Belkin Pre-N. That's important if you need to provide Internet access to a far corner of your house, or that one remote conference room at the office.

It's not as speedy as the Belkin Pre-N, but the Linksys WRT54GX Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX is worth serious consideration if you want excellent range, performance, and attentive customer support in one affordable package.

    Re: Latest Wireless Router

    try this one:

    Asus WL-600G

For testing the WL-600G’s network performance, we used 2 different ADSL2 networks so as to gauge real-life performance. The networks we used were Airtel and MTNL. The speeds that were offered by these respective networks were 512 kb and 2 Mb. These are healthy broadband speeds (at least by Indian standards!). The WL-600G was able to easily sync with both the ISPs and was surprisingly giving us more consistent speeds as compared to our comparison unit-Dlink’s 604T. To confirm this fact we simply downloaded multiple files from our Tech2.com download section, download.com and fileforum.com. Across all these downloads, the Asus WL-600G was consistently faster by about 15-20 percent. This we found to be a great point in favor of the WL600G, as it simply means that the WL-600G is able to manage your bandwidth better and will not choke in case you are a power user.

The WL-600G in keeping with current trends, offers the entire spectrum of current Wi-Fi standards ranging from 802.11a to 802.11g. So for our next test, we configured the router’s Wi-Fi settings. Here we found that the settings page was a bit sparse and has been designed on the premise that the end-user will have some technical information about various security settings and Wi-Fi related terms. This we found to be a drawback, as a lot of users purchasing this device may be first-time users and will no doubt be confused by the various terms here. A wizard based system similar to what is offered by D-link would have been a better move. The Wl-600G we found much to our satisfaction, supports all the Wi-Fi security protocols. We were able to easily configure WPA2+/WPA settings. This is a good move, as it means that your Wi-Fi network will be quite secure and not prone to easy hacking. The second part of our Wi-Fi test involved the sharing of the Internet. This was also fairly easy and with support for DHCP, the router was able to easily share the internet without the need for manual settings on laptops.

In the final part of our tests, we decided to check out the QOS support of the router. QOS in simple laymen terms (in this scenario) means that certain activities such as a VoIP call and Video Streaming get priority over other network activities. For the purposes of our test, we simply connected a Polycom Soundpoint IP 430, a well known VoIP phone to the Ethernet slot at the back of the router. Since the Polycom is DHCP enabled, it was auto-configured and was online in minutes. After this we proceeded to make a few international calls, while making sure that there were some file transfers running at the same time. Normally a VoIP call requires dedicated bandwidth and if it does not get it, the call can get choppy or may not even initiate. This is the reason we made sure, that there were file transfers running while we were making our calls. Here the QOS worked as advertised. Every time we made a call the file transfers would be choked and the VoIP call would go through without stuttering or dying.

At the end of the day we find that the the WL-600G, is a very good network router. Not only does it offer full functionality and comprehensive Wi-Fi settings, which makes it an excellent competitor to the market leader Linksys.

    Re: Latest Wireless Router

Apple AirPort Extreme base station wireless access point:

Excellent performance in an 802.11g-only network at close range; attractive design; solid security; allows network bridging.

Apple's new 802.11g draft-compliant base station, the AirPort Extreme, stands out from the emerging g-crowd in one important respect: in our tests, it offered extremely fast performance when paired with other 802.11g devices. Its performance dips dramatically in a mixed environment (with both 802.11b/g clients), but it performs without a hitch with these older devices, such as the Proxim Orinoco World PC Card. If you're buying a base station for the first time and you have an OS X-equipped Mac to run the setup utility, the AirPort Extreme is an attractive, if slightly expensive, choice--and it offers rock-solid security. However, if you're happy with your current AirPort base station and 802.11b network, there's no need to upgrade since you won't get more than 802.11b speeds in a mixed-mode environment. If you're planning to create a new Wireless-G network, Apple's base station will suffice, but we suggest you wait until the standard matures. The AirPort Extreme box includes a printed setup manual, an installation CD, a power adapter, a bracket for mounting the base station on the wall, and a modem cable (with some models). Unfortunately, Apple fails to throw in an Ethernet cable, so make sure you have a couple extra ones on hand.

The base station itself looks almost identical to the AirPort 2.0, with a slightly sleeker, smooth, mushroom-cap shape. Under the cap, you'll find just two Ethernet ports (one LAN and one WAN); a USB port; and, on some models, a modem port. Three small lights on the front of the device indicate power, LAN connections, and wireless activity; they're not labeled, though, so you'll have to refer to the manual frequently until you memorize their functions. Finally, a Reset button lets you revert to the AirPort's factory settings.
