file sharing between XP sp3 and vista

    hi everyone,

I have three computers, A, B and C. A is running vista, B running xp and C on xp SP3.

i have tried to share one folder among all of them and the folder is on A. after going through all the hassels of configuring the vista machine, now they see each other but i have the following problem:

when i turned off password protection on vista, all three computers can share the file, but B and C cannot modify anything in the folder, even when permission is set to "full control" for "everyone".

i had set up a user account on the vista machine for A and B to share the file. so when i turned on the password protection, B can modify the folder leaving C unable to access the folder.

please any suggestions???? (i tried creating another account on vista for C, but C just doesn't pop up the "username and password" window!!!

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

Forgetting to assign permission in Secure Tab is the common issue. When enabling sharing a root drive, by default, it assigns every one read only. So, the common issues sharing are (1) you may be able to see it but access. (2) you may be able to open it but modify.

We may have different options to fix it.
    1. Enable guest account that is not recommended for the security reason.

    2. Assign everyone full rights in the Security tab that is no secure too.

    3. Create the identical username in all home network computers.

    4. More secure way is assigning users necessary rights to the shared folders based on their needs.

    5. More important, make sure share permissions must match the folder security for access to a share.

I have tried all of these options. C still sees the folder on A without the right to modify. i can't even use the printer linked to A. security is set to full-control, folder share says full-control,and i have even enabled the guest account on top of all these.

i mean i've created username and password on A, my xp sp3 just doesn't give me the window to type them in!

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
    • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
    • Computer Browser
    • DHCP Client
    • DNS Client
    • Network Connections
    • Network Location Awareness
    • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    • Server
    • TCP/IP Netbios helper
    • Windows Zero Configuration (wireless configurations)
    • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. General networking troubleshooting

Here is a general networking troubleshooting below:

Excellent, thorough, yet easy to understand article about File/Printer Sharing in Vista. Includes details about sharing printers as well as files and folders: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx

For XP, start by running the Network Setup Wizard on all machines (see caveat in Item1 below).

Problems sharing files between computers on a network are generally caused by (1) a misconfigured firewall or overlooked firewall (including a stateful firewall in a VPN); or (2) inadvertently running two firewalls such as the built-in Windows Firewall and a third-party firewall; and/or (3) not having identical user accounts and passwords on all Workgroup machines; 4) trying to create shares where the operating system does not permit it.

    1. Configure firewalls on all machines to allow the Local Area Network (LAN) traffic as trusted. With Windows Firewall, this means allowing File/Printer Sharing on the Exceptions tab. Normally running the Network Setup Wizard on XP will take care of this for those machines. The only "gotcha" is that this will turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you aren't running a third-party firewall or have an antivirus/security program with its own firewall component, then you're fine. With third-party firewalls, I usually configure the LAN allowance with an IP range. Ex. would be 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct subnet. Refer to any third party security program's Help or user forums for how to properly configure its firewall. Do not run more than one firewall.
DO NOT TURN OFF FIREWALLS; CONFIGURE THEM CORRECTLY.

    2. For ease of organization, put all computers in the same Workgroup. This is done from the System applet in Control Panel, Computer Name tab.

    3. Create matching user accounts and passwords on all machines. You do not need to be logged into the same account on all machines and the passwords assigned to each user account can be different; the accounts/passwords just need to exist and match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY SIMPLE ONES. If you wish a machine to boot directly to the Desktop (into one particular user's account) for convenience, you can do this. The instructions at this link work for both XP and Vista:

Configure Windows to Automatically Login - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm

    4. If one or more of the computers is XP Pro or Media Center, turn off Simple File Sharing (Folder Options>View tab).

    5. Create shares as desired. XP Home does not permit sharing of users' home directories or Program Files, but you can share folders inside those directories. A better choice is to simply use the Shared Documents folder. See the first link above for details about Vista sharing.

Re: file sharing between XP sp3 and vista

i have set up the same username and password...i can view the folder, still can't get access to it, i have made sure the username has "full control" on the vista machine.

    i have now given up...
just don't understand why the username window pops up on B but not on C~
