Network card N300 Mpbs

I am a bit stupid when we talk about network cards, etc.

But here comes the question:

My wireless router running with (802.11b / g), I can connect me with a wireless network card as driving with N 300Mbps?

It ought to be, but you can not run for more than "g-speed" which is 54mb/s.
