I would like to sum a column with some #N/A in it. I tried using sumif with <> "#N/A" with no luck. What is the criteria for not equal in this function. Do I have to treat "#N/A" in a special way.

You can try the formula =SUMIF(J:J,"<>#N/A",J:J). Test this formula in your cell and if this works then you can simply drag the entire formula to get the same result.
Try office help site. When you add a formula and when there is no result either by default excel puts 0 or empty it. The character which you had mentioned when there is wrong formula or if any value is deleted from any of the cell referenced.
