    i7 3930K LGA 2011 vs i7 2700K LGA 1155 vs Ivy Bridge

I want to have powerful system that can last for at least 4 years, i use my system mostly for gaming and watch movies occasionally . i have heard that i7-3930k does not provide much improvement in performance as compared to i7-2700k unless it is high end games like ARMA 2 and shogun 2. It gets hotter and use lot of power supply. This processor also don’t allow you to overclock much. I would like to use additional 2 cores but they also come with more price. Are there any advantages of using LGA 2011 then LGA 1155? I have overclocked 3.2 GHz Q9450 which is good and stable but still i want to know should i upgrade to 3930k LGA 2011,LGA 1155 with 2700k or wait for the Ivey Bridge? Please suggest ?

If you are going to use it only for gaming and watching movies and other media then it is better to be at what you have. Upgrading will not help you anything. I have i7 860 and it is enough for me and not thinking for upgrading it any soon. I am not a hardcore user though. It will depend on how and for what you use this platform. Though your processor is old but it is enough for you and you don’t have to upgrade it. I was using E6600 before upgrading to my current system.

I think that sandy bridge-E is better than sandy bridge and Ivey Bridge.if you have better budget then i would recommend you to go with sandy bridge-E because it will allow you to upgrade to the Ivey Bridge-E in the future. If this is not possible then you should go for 2500k with Z68 motherboard, you can later upgrade it to Ivey Bridge.

I have Intel i7 3930k with Asus Rampage IV. You shouldn’t buy this unless you are using it for high end applications. I use my all of the 12 threads for playing games like Battle Field 3. I have 6990 GPU and its usage is much higher than my CPU. I can only use 8 threads when doing video rendering along with some others applications. I can still get 80 to 130 fps in Battle Field 3 with resolution of 1920x1200. I have overclocked my system with water cooling on it.

I suggest you wait for Ivey Bridge. if you are not having any need of upgrading the system then you can wait for few months and then upgrade to the Ivey Bridge. if you will compare it to the sandy bridge then you will see that it is 10% faster then it. I think it will also cost you the same as of the sandy bridge. this processor can be overclocked better and uses a lot of less power supply. I think it will be good to buy mid range system and then upgrade it. Ivey Bridge-E will come when it is necessary but you don’t need to wait till then. It will be advisable to buy and then upgrade the mid range computer because it will also cost you very less .
