Question regarding CPU Upgrade of Dell Dimension 5100

I have been using Dell Dimension 5100 an now I am willing to upgrade it to a dual core or possibly a quad core processor but then I am confused in deciding one for the same, actually I am having single core Intel Pentium 4 currently so I don’t know which will be better and compatible with the Dell Dimension 5100, is there anyone who can help me out with the same??

I don’t think that the quad core processor will work with the motherboard that you might be having, I thinking that upgrading to a Pentium D 945 dual-core. Will be a better choice there are a no of them available on eBay and other sites as well just check them out.

I have found that the below ones are not supported:
    • Dual Core
    • Core 2 Duo
    • Core 2 Quad

The only option that I can see for you is Socket LGA-775, you can just go through the below link for more information:

Yes even I have found the same and the reason behind no support for the Dual Core, Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors is the limitation of the voltage regulators.

Re: Question regarding CPU Upgrade of Dell Dimension 5100

I will like to inform you all that the 5100 is same as that of the 5150/E510 where the 5150/E510 supports the D945 processor and I have found that the Intell has also listed them to support D960 but then I don’t know why the Dell's have limited the support to D945. I also wanted to share that I have recently upgraded from a D805 to a D925 and I really don’t think that there is any difference in the performance and the operation that is carried, actually I was willing to get the D945 but then at that time the price was quite high.

Yes it will be supported I think that you have found the best one, I think that it will be supported very well by your motherboard and you will get a boost in performance as well, I think that this will help you in playing modern games as well but then the limiting factor for the resolution will depend on the GPU that you might be having. Hope that helps.
