Does AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE support 1600MHz RAM

Somewhere i have read that the AMD Phenom II processors supports 1600MHz RAM. So after gaining few advice i have purchased some peripherals for my new system.
    • Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
    • Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 mobo
    • 2x4GB Corsair 1600 Vengeance 999 memory

The whole thing works efficiently only if i set BIOS setting to default and memory at 1333MHz. But my intention is to play the system with native speed (1600MHz 9-9-9-24). the problem is when i set the DRAM to 1600Mhz and timings to 9-9-9-24, the system freezes. Do i need to make any more changes to run the system stable? What CPU setting needed?

As I had already bought the RAM, I only learned that memory with more than 1333 MHz without overclocking with the new Intel processors (i5, i7, etc.) can be used, but not with AMD processors because of the FSB or so.

Depending on the board / chipset / CPU without overclocking the CPU is only a predetermined maximum clock speed of the RAM is possible. I can not tell you now exactly how it is with your CPU, since I am Intel user . But with my current Core i7 860, it is as such that I can select in the BIOS, only a maximum clock frequency of 1600 MHz RAM. The board (chipset) can still much higher RAM frequencies (> 2000 MHz), but I must then raise the base clock of the CPU (ie overclock) in order to achieve this can be. This is because the CPU and RAM clock are not independent, but true: RAM Clock = CPU Base Clock * Multi-RAM.

I suppose it will be similar to the AMD.

The RAM voltage is completely independent of it, however, these must always be set separately in the BIOS, with higher clock and / or tighter latencies (= shorter timings) usually require a voltage increase. Here, however, the maximum allowed by the manufacturer must be observed necessarily voltage.

The problem will probably be your CPU which supports DDR3 memory, according to AMD only until 1333. When the memory controller supports the CPU clock frequency than the maximum, it can use only those over HyperTransport speed. (If the connection is negotiated between two endpoints is the fastest common speed!)

The AMD Phenom II X4 BE processor executes the native quad-core design of AMD Phenom X4 to the next level: A total of 8MB large cache (2MB L2, 6MB L3), further optimizations such as HyperTransport 3.0 and the "Smart Fetch" technology and manufacturing in 45 nm for a decent boost in performance and energy efficiency. The integrated memory controller supports up to provide DDR2-1066 or DDR3-1333.

Re: Does AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE support 1600MHz RAM

I have the motherboard and 4GB of ram which are officially supported by the motherboard itself. The processor is an AMD Phenom II X4 965. Currently (AUTO mode) operate at 1333MHz with timings 9-9-9-24 and I want them to operate at 1600Mhz with timings 7-8-7-24 as specified. Trying in the BIOS to set the frequency to 1600Mhz timings leaving the car (and then 9-9-9-24) the system works. Instead, even trying to force the timings to 7-8-7-24, the restart is written out overclocking FAILED and requires you to reset the settings to default (AUTO). The voltage is 1.35 V to AUTO and then as per specifications. The low voltage is only for intel, I had the echo and to make them work on the crosshair iv formula I had set them to 1.45 as it says system shock to those voltages only work with intel.

Whether you can use the 1600 - depends on the memory controller on the CPU! Since you use the Phenom II X4 965 - at least indicate your system data out - you can only use 1333MHz memory.

Re: Does AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE support 1600MHz RAM

Specifies the RAM clock when AMD Phenom II DDR3 up to 1333rd Everything else is out of specification. And Intel processors up to 1156 Specifies the maximum DDR3 1333rd. But there are motherboards that allow the BIOS to set DDR3 1600 or more. However, when the AM3 processors, DDR3 1600 rather less often the case at all and everything about it is almost impossible. This is probably owe to the memory controller, just a combination of the memory controller that supports both DDR2 and DDR3. However, the advantages of higher clock RAM and a 15.8 story completely insignificant. Then, if one can measure up to these higher clock feel, or even minimal benefits are not just given.

AMD boards are generally a much lower maximum RAM clock speed than Intel expected and you will not be able to reach 2000MHz. from 1600 is already so difficult, the investment is not necessarily worth it. The processor on it, it is the eighth version of a C3, 955 or 965 does not matter if you do not mind the price difference.

Re: Does AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE support 1600MHz RAM

Correctly, overclocking means always running around outside the specification of the manufacturers. Even if you install 1600 RAM is what is seen overclocking that process because the processor can only 1333Mhz RAM. Incidentally, this also means that AMD is nothing more than a guarantee that 1333er RAM is definitely running, so regardless of the manufacturer and the RAM slot loading. Everything else is at the discretion of the user. So you can be sure that four RAM bars are definitely with 1333 RAM running at 1333MHz on your board. In 1600 or above are no longer a guarantee of AMD, they can run with the higher clock, but do not have. Intel has raised the bar in 1366 and even lower down only guarantees 1066, the same goes for the 980 X.

Re: Does AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE support 1600MHz RAM

Yes it does... I've been running an AMD 965be, Asus M4a785TD Evo, Crucial 4gb dual @ 1600mhz 8-8-8-24 rated speeds.

I recently tried to use G skill 8gbs, but it constantly had errors.

I've benchmarked with 3dmark11 custom resolution 1680x1050 and found there is an increase from using crucial 1600mhz 8-8-8-24 over 1333mhz 9-9-9-24 ( both jedec speeds for this memory. The physics score improved 172 points. All other scores had 1 or less fps improvement. Stock north bridge of 2000.

    Increasing the NB to 2400 + the 1600mhz = a physics score +290

It's not huge gains, but it is there.
