showing 800 Mhz Ram as 667 Mhz in intel DG31PR motherboard.

i am using windows 7 with intel DG31PR motherboard and as there was a requirement for 2 RAM sticks, i made installation of both of them on my system. both of them are transcend 2GB 800 Mhz and at the time of putting each one of them at a time on board my BIOS shows that its 800 Mhz for both of them . But BIOS reports them as 667 Mhz at the time of placing both the sticks together . i am not understanding what the exact situation is going on. can i suggest some remedies to solve it.

the first suggestion i can give is that you should check for memory that you make use of. the memory should meets the criteria. i think more in your case that if you are running with the latest board bios firmware and with a compatible processor , the only thing you should do is to have a check over memory specs..

there are some memory specifications relating to your system , which you should have a check over it. you can find System Memory Features on the intels site and then make a comparison whether it is supporting on your computer or not. if you are not interested in doing all this, then if f you have alternative to change the memory settings in the bios, you can make an attempt but to do this on your own risk. just check the warranty period of your board . by trying this it could be possible that you may encounter with board problems.

i can say in this case that this kind of problem arises when you mix different memory module model. there is a similar kind of problem on desktop board and server board as well. you may experience this at the time of making use of untested or unvalidated memory when you take in terms of compatibility, on most of the server boards.

as you said that you are using transcend , but in my case as i am with a same problem as of yours, and making use of a DG31PR with a Q6600 (quad core 2) with the DIMM Kingston 1GB 800Mhz . and require some suggestions about the update the BIOS .

i think the problem occurring in your case is with the RAM SPD timings and memory voltage by the board . i think you should make sure of both of them . when auto detected by Intel BIOS, it came to my notice that kingston 2 GB DDR2 800Mhz single stick RAM used to work at 667Mhz speed.later after knowing about the topic with a more extent, i came to know that this particular RAM stick is supposed to be designed for 2V which is not supported by the board and it require to be 1.8V make, the SPD timings were working fine for me. I tried by changing the memory configuration by myself in bios but it used to go in infinite reboot cycle, after setting it at 800Mhz.

in my case there was a similar kind of problem occurring. when i notice the specification for my board it appears that if I make use of a qualified DDR2 800MHz DIMMs I am able to run at 800MHz as long as I have just 1-GB DIMMs for a total of 4GB at max. i can get up to 8GB total RAM If i make use of 2-GB DIMMs, the desktop board down-cycles to 667MHz and . apart from the problem of loss of some FSB performance , specification-compliant 800MHz RAM will tend to work at 667MHz.

i am not understanding if i would like to have 8GB and it seems that it will work in this case just at 667MHz, not 800MHz. and in addition to this, i am not able to understand why does the design of a chipset support 800MHz for 4GB and that in the case of 667MHz for 8GB?

i can have a reply for your question. as i was with up gradation process of my DG965WH board to the latest BIOS image. the Intel MQ96510J.86A.1754.EB.EXE Windows XP executable was not able to execute. therefore i made a decision for downloading Intel MQ96510J.86A.1754.EB.EXE Windows XP executable. i made a purchase of Corsair 2GB sticks of DDR2 800MHz RAM . in my case it indicates that the bus speed will be stepped down to 667MHz.
