    Circumstances necessary for Turbo Boost to be sustainable

    I am using dual core Intel Xeon 5670 six for some CPUs, high strength, high stakes, the image processing. Intel Turbo Boost is throwing a wrench in our benchmarking. For benchmarking, we are considering turning it off to reduce the variation, but production still want to use it because the performance is very important. The main question we need to know is under what circumstances the turbo mode is sustainable? Please Intel, we give some conditions under which the turbo mode will be sustained. It need not be accurate (ie, release your design), but it is correct 95% of the time.

    Turbo Boost is not overclocking. Turbo Boost technology opportunistically allows the processor to run faster than the frequency marked if the part is operating below the limits of power, temperature and current.
    Turbo Boost Operation:
    • - Works under the OS control - did not enter the operating system calls for increased performance state (P0)
    • - Turbo Boost is available regardless of the number of active cores
    • - Turbo Boost frequency is dependent on the number of active cores and varies depending on the processor
    • - Amount of time the system spends in Turbo Boost will depend on the workload, the operating environment, and platform design.

    If your benchmark workload varies (which is more typical in the real world), in whole or in amount through the cores, turbo kick in and as required in any of the three partners highs. Since in this case, the main use of current draw / power and temperature can be different, leaving you with a problem of multiple variables. The maintenance of the turbo uses less of all nuclei. Not a good solution for most application, because what is lost in the central processing power is more likely that what you gain in turbo boost unless your application is not only able to use all cores. If you only run two cores on a 5670, the processor must remain at 3.33 GHz I have seen at least one system that began abandoning turbo ~ 90% CPU utilization, the base 5 of the 5th) of the CPU must remain at 3.20 GHz

    Imon curve is the input source for the processor and a hardware calibration level that tells the processor how much current it is drawing. This adjustment may be susceptible to properly set it can lead to different motherboards responding differently to the turbo, the same processors that some vendors Imon resulting report is to promote and turbo in the risk of damaging the CPU or information falling system turbo mode earlier than necessary.

    My workload can be assumed to be fixed as the team will be scanning images 24 / 7 and is the bottleneck. So I think the power and the existing must be a function of temperature and manufacturing variations. They also assume the power and existing are the same and only the current uses to decide how fast Intel Turbo. No exact numbers for temperature and power, which is not good. We get new Intel CPUs almost every generation and certainly do not want to have to try dozens of them to determine if all they can maintain a certain frequency Turbo.

    You can run a quick check to see if the turbo boost kicks in to run a tool from the CPU voltage can be configured to target individual drivers and increasing the number of workers and the number of threads by setting the CPU affinity in the window of workers to concentrate all the tension in the nuclei of target. (Intel has a developer tool for this, but I cannot find it. I think it's the same link in the document 1 below) can also run Prime95.

    Turbo Boost mode makes additional performance (under certain conditions), increasing the clock speed from a predetermined action based on the processor to maintain a maximum of energy (and temperature) specifications. (Blue lines) over the base rate increases overclock the processor to obtain additional performance will also alter the slope of the line Turbo Boost unfavorable since the peak power remains fixed. If only run an application that uses the CPU more than 5 cores, Turbo Boost would like to get a better (and safer) increase overclocking performance. Now if you were able to adjust overclocking up to 3, 60, 3, 8, not fried the processors, which just blew the doors of the turbo.
