No signal to keyboard/mouse or boot up

I have a Compaq Presario 500GB and 2GB Ram with Vista. A couple of days ago I tried moving the mouse to bring the computer out of sleep mode and the monitor light stayed amber. I rechecked all the wiring and shut down using the power button on the tower and restarted. This time there was no activity from the keyboard or mouse either. The computer starts to boot up, but then stops suddenly after just a few seconds. I moved recently and don't have the disks that came with the computer. Is this a motherboard issue? I don't want to pay $120 for someone to tell me to get a new computer. Any thoughts?

Are you saying that your laptop isnt booting to the BIOS screen at all? If that is the case, then try to remove the CMOS battery from your laptop for 4-5 minutes and then place it back on and try to boot the laptop again. If the pc is able to boot then go into the BIOS, choose the section that would say something like Power Management. You should be able to set it to DISABLE or NONE.
