Considering switching from Intel Core i5-2500K to Intel Core i7-2600k

I am currently using a Intel Core i5-2500K and now I am planning to go to Intel Core i7-2600k.I actually didn’t knew how good the Intel Core i5-2500k over clocked until I started reading around. I am looking at OC to 4GHZ and I think that it will be plenty for me and what I do. But for this I am not sure that is it a right decision to buy the 2600k. So if you have any suggestions then do get back to me and let me know that I am right or wrong.

I think that you should go for it and in that you will have one more advantage. I guess that you will save some money in that deal. Then you can go for a new ssd with that money or even wait until the new INTEL G3’s come out. I am not very sure about the 4GHZ quad core. I use a core i3 540 with overclocking of 4.2 and then I just added the ssd in it and then it was the big upgrade. I could see on everything and it made my computer lighting fast to me. So I feel that even you should go for the same.

I wouldn’t agree with the previous solution that is given. The Intel Core i7-2600k for sure does not offer a performance increase proportionate to its price even for applications that take advantage of hyper threading. As far as I am concerned I know that the OC difference is for sure not worth the price difference and it really depends on your luck. Some review sites I believe received 2500k which clocked higher than the 2600k.For me the main factor in the addition to hyper threading is the extent of possible importance of the larger cache size in the future.

I was actually considering the same choice but then I decided to drop down the 2500k though, and use that money for other things. This was done because I would try to resell and switch to an Ivy bridge later on. And then the upgrade would feel larger by getting something lower now. For most people the 2500k is the best choice. It has the OC almost as much as the 2600k and it performs about the same in pretty much every game so you just won’t have hyper threading. For me it would be good if you stick to the Intel Core i5-2500K.

I read somewhere that the reviewers received 2500k's that overclocked higher than 2600k.For me this seems to be a little untrue. According to me you just need a suitable sample size of 2500k's comparing 2600k's with HT disabled, before you can make a valid conclusion. Also from what I have seen the 2600k's as a whole just seems to go a bit higher than the average 2500k's. Along with this I feel that when disabling Hyper Threading on a 2600k it always allows you to clock a bit higher.

Even I agree with the fact that the over clocking on these SB chips are depends complete on the luck. The default VID of the chips which more often than not relate to the highest absolute multiplier and this can be achieved without needing PLL over voltage. But if you plan on keeping your CPU more than a year then you should without any hesitation go with the 2600k. If you plan on dump it for Ivy Bridge then go with the 2500k.This would be my suggestion.
