Intel i7 960 Vs Intel i5 760 for Gaming and Video Editing

In recent times I am looking forward for constructing a gaming/video making desktop PC for my personal usage. But I stuck between the 2 processor. Currently my system has Intel i5 760, EVGA FTW motherboard and 4 GB RAM. Now my upgrade specifications are PSU to Intel i7 960, EVGA FTW3 motherboard and RAM up to 6GB. But I don’t know which one I should stick now. I don’t have any idea what’s the difference in these 2 processors. Should I need to upgrade it for gaming or it is possible to move along with the current configuration other than spending extra bucks for upgrade. Please give a solution to my problem. My mind has become already. I am not getting any idea or reason for this issue. Does it make any difference?

Why do you really upgrade your system to i7 960? I think you can get the 920 or 930 for much less than 960. You can then over clock it to the same level without much effort. If I want to upgrade my system I will probably select i7 920 or 930 rather than spending extra amount for 960. I am not blaming for the choice of motherboard and RAM. It is a good thing to add extra 2GB RAM. You can keep it in triple channel mode in i7. After overclocking you will get somewhat similar result as i7 960. I think it is the good choice for saving some money and spend it to some other.

I have seen that most users now a day’s tend to buy the i7-950 for their gaming rig. So it is the choice of 1156 vs 1366 platform. The choice is depends on you, if you can afford money then go i7. As far as the i5 concern it will perform as close to i7 with similar clock speed. If it is entirely for gaming, the i5 is much more sufficient. To take advantage of the complete prospective of a 1366 platform, you have to work on video edit, encoding or some heavy applications. For a gaming assemble putting spare money on an improved card or a second card may be a well investment rather than spending for a CPU. Only several game uses the four cores like i7. The performance of the game actually rely on the quality of the GPU.

Don’t lose i5 760 except you got a lot of Video Encoding job on your computer. If you are only intended to use computer for gaming and infrequent indoctrination, the i5 will outfit 99.9% of your requirements. If you really concerning with reference to $50-100 for some boost in performance then I suggest you go for it, In realism you will almost certainly not obtain a advanced overclock. Unless spending several dollars for CPU it is better to get another GPU for gaming. For this the 1366 platform is the most excellent choice because it can encompass as much as 4x16 PCIE. The 1156 motherboard are narrow to 1x16 PCIE. so it is you choice whether you want two graphic card or a single high end card.

When I looked into some game forums and reviews I found that most of the new generation game works well on 4 core processors. They are specifically designed or developed for those. But there is nothing problem if we play those games on i5. If you are looking for some heavy video editing with high end applications then you may use i7. Whatever it may be once you decided to update to i7 then don’t turn back around. It may not help you now but in future you won’t get any issue or no need to upgrade for several months.
