Optiplex 745 supported memory options

I want to upgrade, i am having Optiplex 745 with 2GB memory.So i order the listed compatible memory for my machine. I receive the memory, after installing the system does not boot.I call to dell tech support they suggest me to replace the 2GB for 2x1GB sticks. I am using windows xp 32 bit. Any one else got this type of memory working on their system? inform me as soon as possible.

i think your machine does not support 1x2GB sticks. The lady at dell tech has given you the right suggestion you should exchange 1x2GB to 2x1GB DDR2. And the speed 800MHz will not effect you at all and it will downclock to the right speed. This will have no problem on your system and your system will just work fine.

I think you have not read the specification of Optiplex 745. You should visit to dell site and click on memory specification for optiplx 745. In the specification it is clearly specified that 2GB 800MHz memory modules are not supported with the exception of the Ultra SFF Optiplex 745 where 2gb modules are supported. So try to get the compatible one.
