Upgrade from Intel Core i5 660 to Intel Core i7 870

I am having a Dell Optiplex 980 device which is having the Intel Core i5 660 processor installed. But i am not happy with the performance of it as it is not giving enough Horsepower. So i am planning to upgrade to the Intel Core i7 870 but not sure whether it is possible to swap Intel Core i5 660 with the Intel Core i7 870. If any one having enough knowledge please help me.

As per my knowledge both the processor are working with the same socket which is used in the Dell Optiplex 980 so if you are planning to do the same then let me tell you that the device which you are using. So according to me you can fit the Intel Core i7 870 into the same which you are looking for.

As per your suggestion i have contacted the Intel regarding my query i.e. "Upgrade from Intel Core i5 660 to Intel Core i7 870" but i have not got the satisfactory solution for my problem. All they say that if you replace the existing one then you will loose the warranty of the same. Please help me with the same.

I am having the same query with the device of mine in which i wanted to upgrade the system with the new Intel Core i7 870 in place of the existing Intel Core i5 660 and i have placed the same with the help of the Intel. And let me tell it is not having any issue with the same. So i think you can also go through the same.

I will suggest you to visit the Dell official site and ask the same question about the upgradation of the processor. As you are using the dell product so they will help you with the proper solution that will help you regarding the upgradation of the processor. I have gone through the all the replies and the solution provided by you and contacted the Dell regarding the query of mine and they suggested me to upgrade the same i.e. Upgrade from Intel Core i5 660 to Intel Core i7 870. Now i have upgraded with the Intel Core i7 and having no problem with it. Thanks a lot for all support.
