Dell Inspiron 9100 Will Not Power Up

    hi,
i have Dell Inspiron 9100,Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz Processor,512MB PC3200 DDR Memory ,60GB 7200rpm Hard Drive,4x DVD+R/RW Burner Optical Drive15.4" WXGA (1280x800) LCD Display and ATI Mobility 9700 Graphics with 64MB Memory,AC'97 Audio,v.92 56Kbps Modem, 10/100 Ethernet and 802.11g Wireless,Four USB 2.0, One FireWire and One Type II PC Card Slot 14.1" x 10.8" x 2.0" @ 8.9 lbs.Windows XP Home Operating System, yesterday i wasn't able to turn it off, so I pushed the rest button underneath. The computer will now not power up at all, with or without the power cord plugged in. Some points of interest. Battery wasn't holding much of a charge anyway. Laptop fell off bed about a week ago, but was running normally. Laptop was running normally until it locked up, but power still on and screen still ok, power supply pack was damaged (had taped over the wires) and so the battery possibly wasn't charging right. Was working on it and it gave me a battery warning then went down completely. What has happened and what is the solution? Can anyone help!!!

Re: Dell Inspiron 9100 Will Not Power Up

    hi,
It’s possible that the power jack (the socket where you plug the adapter) is loose or damaged. When you move the AC plug inside the power jack it shorts the motherboard and because of that the laptop shuts down.

It’s necessary to disassemble the laptop, remove the motherboard and take a closer look at the power jack. If it’s broken or loose you may fix the problem without replacing the whole motherboard.
    • Disassemble the laptop. You’ll find instructions in the official service manual.
    • remove the motherboard and take a closer look at the power jack.
    • If the power jack is loose or broken, you’ll have to resolder or replace the jack.
    • Find a new power jack and replace it.

Before you take it apart, I would suggest testing the laptop with another working power adapter. Will it shut down with another adapter? If not, your problem could be related to the adapter. Apparently, there are damaged wires inside the power cable and you short them moving the cable. It’s possible the laptop shuts down because of that.

If you still have the same problem even with another adapter, you can inspect the power jack as suggested above.

I think you have defiantly the same problem as me. It is the DC power connector on the motherboard, there is no damage to your CPU ore anything else on your computer. The problem is that the DC power connection is disconnected from your motherboard. fixing it is not as easy as you think, I have been trying to solder it, but its just not working. I think we have to get our hands on a new board.

If you have warranty, I think Dell can fix it, but if they you don't have warranty, is going to cost you.

it sounds like your laptop is still not getting power, or at least not the correct power. Can you try your AC adapter in a friend's computer or borrow theirs for a test?

It's also possible that the power connector in your computer has gotten loose, and isn't making connection well. If that's the case, a good repair shop could probably solder it back on at a reasonable price.
