Thought of buying a new Intel motherboard and processor and was wondering what gives the best performance in relation to price.
Or should I invest in another brand?

not ram?
if you have good DDR2 ram than a E8400 and a P45 asus p5q good upgrade would be best in my opinion ...
I have DDR2 Ram. How is this same processor compared with four cores. Will I notice any difference?
Forgot to write that my old installation on the hard disk is done on a board with a P35 chipset and I'd prefer not to install everything again ..
4 cores is good ... if you use applications that support it ... and there is almost no one does ...
do not think you will need to reinstall
Running several programs/processes that do not support multi-core are these distributed over the cores of the OS (which in located in one of those who have least to do), but will only utilize as many cores as the application/process is designed to use, many programs/games have hard coded support for up to 2 processors, where the process is set up so that if it detected more than one core/processor as the specific set of things in their own thread to run on this kernel. This means that they do not have much left for multiple cores in the application, but multiple cores leads to that game/program can enjoy a 2 cores fully while the OS and any other background processes rotate around on the 2 remaining cores.
