Re: AMD Phenom 9950 125w Vs AMD Phenom 9950 140w

    hi........

AMD's Phenom processor has been power hungry since it's release but that was stepped up even more when the Phenom 9950 was released with a 125W TDP, higher desktop CPUs on the market. Recently, however, AMD released a 125W version of the Phenom 9950 after improving the manufacturing process to replace the previous 140W version. Both are still on the market now and i thought to take a look at this new Phenom 9950 125W and compare it to the original 140W processor.

Re: AMD Phenom 9950 125w Vs AMD Phenom 9950 140w

    My views:
The idle power measurement was taken 5 minutes into Windows Vista desktop idling the computer by the professionals. Load was with all four cores at 100% in task manager using Valve's map creator benchmark to stress the CPU fully. C'nQ recognizes Cool 'n Quiet enabled. They tested these processors multiple times and found at least in specific CPUs basically no difference between our 140W Phenom 9950 BE and 125W Phenom 9950 BE in regards to power consumption. They were not expecting a large difference given the only 15W maximum difference in rating between the two processors but They basically saw none in all instances of testing. One thing we do see is Cool 'n Quiet save about 25W at idle.

They spoke with experts at AMD about this and they told us that there will be variation in processors in power consumption between processors even of the same model . Looking at just these two this might have been a 140W Phenom 9950 that was towards the lower-end of power consumption and a 9950BE 125W which was towards the higher-end. Somewhat similar to how no two processors will overclock the same there will be some variance in power consumption between two processors. So looking at only two might show nothing but they said they took 100 of each and tested to see more variation between the processors. Additionally AMD might have been cautious in their rating for the Phenom 9950BE 140W.

Re: AMD Phenom 9950 125w Vs AMD Phenom 9950 140w

From the testing and various results obtained by the harware experts the temperatures read with AMD's Overdrive software it seems to be of more of a difference between the two processors with the Phenom 9950 BE 125W coming in a few degrees under the 140W version.

Overclocking the two processors it seems that there is no difference at all between the two again as both hit a maximum of 3.3GHz using AMD's ACC technology on the SB750.

but to add more here if going through basics and calculating feedbacks, 140w version raises at approximately 3 degress in temperature as well as 3 celcius in temperature then 125W; so we can say the difference is small but there is a difference between both of these processors in terms of temperature.

Re: AMD Phenom 9950 125w Vs AMD Phenom 9950 140w

    Check this one:

AMD has recently launched a Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition (BE) processor. This processor is currently the fastest processor that AMD is offering until the 45nm version of the Phenom comes to the market. The Phenom X4 9950 is clocked at 2.6GHz and is manufactured on 65nm Silicon on Insulator (SOI) technology. It supports a 2.0 GHz memory controller and HT 3.0.

Phenom X4 9950 BE is that AMD has two versions of the processor with a thermal envelope of 125W and 140W. The processor 125W version of the X4 Phenom 9950 BE with label HD995ZXAJ4BGH. There is a 140W version available on the market with the label HD995ZFAJ4BG.

Due to its thermal envelope, this processor would require a motherboard that is capable of supporting a thermal design power (TDP) of either 125W or 140W. Unfortunately, not all AM2/AM2+ boards will support 125W/140W processors.
Since we are talking about the motherboard compatibility, it would be a good time to mention the new Southbridge, SB750, from AMD. Currently, most boards with SB750 are bundled with the 790GX chipset, a chipset with integrated GPU aimed towards the mainstream market. However, some manufactures actually put the SB750 with a more enthusiast chipset, the 790FX, such as the M3A79-T Deluxe board from Asus.

AMD has strategically priced the processor with low cost, which makes it very competitive against Intel’s faster clockspeed dual core processor and Intel’s entry quad core processor.
