PC too slow

My PC has become very slow over time, despite by frequent cleanings and defragmentations. What should I do to speed it again like in its past? Desktops processor equipped with AMD Athlon 2800, memory 512 MB DDRam 400Mhz, Windows XP family. Thank you in advance for your help.

How old is it? if you had your PC for more than 5 years, I would advise you to buy another pc.
