Should i go for a 1440p monitor for gaming purpose?

I have no complaints regarding the current Dell 2311h monitor I am having, its only that now I need to switch to some other higher resolution monitors overcoming the 1920x1080 resolution to something 2560x1440. I might probably go for either a HP ZR27W or a Dell U2711H with a resolution of 2560x1440. Hope you got what exactly my criteria, yeah its 1440p resolution.

But now with this option there are certain questions that are going around in my mind. The first and the major question is whether I am doing a sensible switch, if yes then let me know whether 1440p LOOK better with lower graphics vs 1080p with max graphics?

I guess we both are in the track; even I need to upgrade my monitor with some better resolution display say 1440p+. I would appreciate your questions but along with the same above queries I have some more other GPU related doubts. Currently I am playing Battlefield 3, I know my SLI GTX 570 somehow have more power on a small and weak 1080p screen and therefore I am planning to upgrade to large resolution monitor. Now the thing is that I am not going to be satisfied with anything less than max graphic settings on 1080p. Just wanted to ask that turning down graphical settings does really makes any difference with the gameplay. Another I need to ask is that really AA still very much important in 1440p.

Currently I am using a 2560x1600 monitor at my place which is running fine and well. Anyways the only suggestion I can give you before you go for any upgrade is to first try out testing your GPU with the games at the desired resolution in order to just make sure that you can easily get the necessary performance and quality.

Yeah I do agree with the suggestion you should definitely test the GPU, I personally feel that 1440p+ is somehow going to cause few minor trouble and issues. You know I have a 30" LCD and a 5 years old GTX580 3b card, now this card is unable to even run SWTOR or RIFT at max setting and at 1080p it runs at the max settings easily without any issue. I am not sure whether SLI or crossfire actually boosts the performance of the game, so says it does whereas some says it doesn’t.

Can’t answer your question completely but I many a times I have found that a 2560x1600/1440 panel that are at higher level are not that much required whereas at 1080p you can you can surely notice some help for them. Just having your demanding AA I can only say that I will not at be surprised or shocked if you are forced to turn down your quality settings on BF3 beyond.

There is no doubt that you will be very much ok with a single 7970 at 2560x1440, you know my 6970 even today performs well at 2560x1600. Also I would like to tell you that if you compare 1080p and 1600p, you will find that 1080p is just 2 million pixels whereas 2560x1600 is 4 million pixles. So you can say that with 1600 you get twice better and faster power to run it. Its not just the GPU that is required for everything. Therefore it will take 2 x 7970's to get same FPS at 2560x1600 as it would 1080p. the system which I am owning is a 2600k @ 4.8ghz and a 6970 on water and it plays BF3 very much fine at 2560x1600, I am unable to turn up AA or anything but anyways it still runs fine without it. Everything depends upon you, at the time of gaming at 2560x1440 you will only need like 2xAA in order to be happy with the PQ.

According to my experience I have never find any issue running any games all the way up. My system have a 260gtx running my 2560x1600 dell, and it play games like Diablo 3 beta and World of Warcraft awesomely. But I am sure the case is not going to be the same with Battlefield 3, obviously BF3 is going to eat up the card all the way.

I guess I can let you know a better experience with 1440p display. Initially I had 3 1920x1200 displays installed at my place but then later on I switched to a single 2560x1440 display and I must say that its awesome experience on 1440p display than playing it on either a single 1920x1200 or infinity in portrait or landscape config.

Currently I am on crossfire 6950s and I however consider selling them for a single 7970. Also another fact I would like to tell you is that if you see a 1440p+ resolution don’t really works as per the expectation with a single powerful GPU. So therefore better you crossfire.

Didn’t experienced 2560 x 1440 all the way as I have recently switched it from other display. Anyways till now I have only tested few games and that includes Starcraft II which runs smoothly at its maximum settings without any issue. but unfortunately I didn’t have the same positive experience with other games too e.g. Skyrim. Also I must say that switching from 1080p was really a positive noticeable thing.
