Need suggestions upgrading from HD5970 to GTX680

Hello everyone. I am a gamer and in serious need of a GPU upgrade. I presently have a 5970 from MSI. It has worked amazingly for me so long. Recently, while gaming I see a lot of tearing on the newer titles that I play and I take it as a sign that the GPU has reached its full potential and is now starting to crawl a bit. I game on a single monitor setup with the resolution of 1920x1080 (FullHD). I need some suggestions as to which Graphics card should I upgrade to. Right now I am looking at the GTX680 from MSI and it seems like a nice choice to me but I want to know how well does it fare against the other cards and is it worth the $500 price premium?

The 680 is definitely a progressive jump from the 5970 but not as drastic to justify the $500 price tag. And in terms of performance you wouldn’t be disappointed but won’t definitely be amazed either. Expect a 15-20% increase in performance. That’s all

If you are a no hold barred gamer I’d suggest you get the 680. But from a mere logical standpoint I wouldn’t go for it unless I had a lot of cash just laying around the house or was being blackmailed by the mafia to upgrade.

Any specific reason for abandoning AMD and turning to the 680? Also a better alternative would be the 7970 which would be approximately 50% faster than the 5970 although a bit costlier than the 680 it would be the better performer than the 680. As I see it if you are willing to invest $500 you can always afford to pay a little extra to get the best performance there is.

Let’s see if you hold on to that advice when the 690 comes out. Take note that you are comparing a Dual GPU solution to a single one. I’d like to point out that although this still being an unfair competition the GTX680 excels in certain scenarios and requires a lot less power than the 7970.

The OP wants to make the purchase today so you can’t suggest a card that will be released god knows when and I know of nvidia’s delays in product launch more than anyone. Believe me I was once a proud owner of 8800 ultra but not anymore. And there’s reason behind me talking like this. I don’t get paid for the comments I make. I just take my experiences and punch it on the keyboard so that other people can make the right decisions. Also you couldn’t be more wrong about the power consumption of the two cards. The way I see it the 7970 uses two GPUs and still uses the same amount of power the GTX680 does. You’d need a kilowatt to power just two 680s. Just thinking of the electricity bills gives me a chill in the bones. Good luck if you opt for the 680s. That’s all I have to say.
