hp 20inch monitor not detected

i reformatted my laptop everything went fine then i went to use my hp 20inch monitor but here is where the problem comes in it displays the screen but it does not detect the monitor ( i used the disk to install the drivers for the monitor) but in the setting area its not found it only has the default i cant change anything so the res on the hp monitor is all crazy and i dont know what to do

It seems to me that you havent installed the proper graphics drivers of your laptop and hence you are getting that distorted graphics on the screen. If you can tell us what is the laptop specifications and model number that you have got, then we can find the proper graphics driver for it, that you can install.

the other monitor i want to use is a hp s2031

i used the operating system disc to reformatt the laptop and i have the install disc for the hp monitor and i used that but it didnt work

You mean to say that you want to connect a extra monitor with your laptop? How are you connecting the laptop to the monitor, does it has a onboard graphics card with dvi output or something? I am not able to find the laptops specs, so download cpuz which will tell you what is it excatly and let us know about it.
