How to stream movies on apple tv from an external hard drive

I have recently bought apple tv and I am also having an external hard drive, so I just wanted to know that how can I play or stream movies to my tv from the external hard drive?? Actually I am having a no of movies on the external hard drive and I am willing to watch them, is there anyone who can help me out with the same, any help regarding the same will be highly appreciated.

I think that I can help you out here, you can just connect the external hard drive to your mac/pc and then you can just copy the movies to iTunes and then just keep it running with the leaving the itunes open, just try it out and then let me know if you have any doubts with the same.

You won’t be able to stream it directly but then you can try out the other way as well and it is by adding the content to iTunes with Home Sharing, you can say this as an alternate method as well.
