Gaming at 2560x1600 with single GTX 580

I have the intention of building a new gaming system in the next 2 to 3 months and I'm leaning towards a screen 30 "16:10 (probably the ZR30w HP or Dell U3011). I can play a lot of FPS, RTS, and the occasional MMO and I really like playing my games in all its graphical goodness intended, preferably at a decent speed. Is it reasonable to expect that a single GTX 580 would be able to foresee that in the latest games and short term 2560x1600? If not, there would be two 580s in SLI is enough? And if so, what kind of issues (if any) still exists with an SLI configuration? (My only previous experience with SLI was back in the 3Dfx days). I 'am waiting on the sand availability Bridge and comments to finalize the hardware, but as of now, I anticipate the construction of the platform around a i7-2600K, a good motherboard, probably 12GB DDR3 and a power supply of high enough quality to feed it.

according to me You require two 580s. I'm running 2560x1440 right now was a single 6970 and I see the need for another card to get the full effect on the peak. There is no need for the entire RAM, unless you are doing a lot of ram intensive tasks. Two 580 would be ideal for 30 ". I doubt highly that a single 6970 or 580 does not drop under 60 FPS within whichever modern game with maximum settings. There is a difference between 30 FPS and 60 FPS IMO.

I cannot really recommend the 580GTX at current prices. If you want SLI I would go with a pair of 570GTX. Once you go SLI with the dissimilarity among it and the 580GTX just not worth the price. And on a screen only 4MP will not see any difference. As for the need to go SLI, no. you can see better frame rates and might be able to spin 32CSAA but the difference between the real world and 8xAA (hell even 4xAA) is quite minimal. Unless you need to Crysis by 4xAA at 60 fps in 4MP no, I do not really need. That does not mean that it would be awesome.

Depends on what you categorize as modern. There are not a lot of "modern" games that actually stress your hardware. Crysis, Metro 2033, and STALKER are the simply examples I be able to think of. Darksiders In games similar to, Resident Evil 5, Mass Effect 2, Black Ops, I signify over 60 FPS through all the most excellent. Even fully Pd peak was astonishingly 8xAA play at 2560x1600 on a single 6970. He got about 30 FPS in some very intense scenes nevertheless otherwise an overall average within the high 40 to 60. That is quite playable for me. In fact, I went from a dual GPU 5970 to 6970 and found the overall experience much smoother, but that's probably due to limited VRAM 2GB in 5970.

A card was very well in anticipation of DX11 games were released. While you are looking to play upcoming games also will be DX11 titles, two GTX 580s would be the most excellent route. If you are trying to save some money get two 6970s. I always recommend getting a card first; to evaluate their experience, then decide if you need a second. Metro and Crysis only imposed a GTX 580 in this resolution and I'm not sure you need to spend an extra $ 500 to play. If somebody needs to play games at 60 fps + without fail, be suppose to not be in the market for a 30 "monitor. 1080p would be a superior solution. OC the GTX 580 regarding 15% over stock and you'll comprise a huge experience.
