Is it possible to upgrade from GTX 280 to GTX 570

I have a monitor of 1920x1200 and have a GTX 280 to play games in it. Now I have a friend who has a GTX 570 and he plays the games on screen 1400x900. So I was just wondering that can I upgrade from GTX 280 to GTX 570.Also I am interested in knowing that how much effect it will be if my friend switches from GTX 570 to GTX 280.If anyone knows this or has anyone done this in the past then do get back to me immediately.

I had a GTX 570 and that was my main card for a while. But I feel that it is very much possible to switch from GTX 280 to GTX 570.And I would like to tell you that the GTX 570 is a lot better. Also when I had the GTX 570 to running at 1920x1200 I got performance improvements .So it was very much useful for me. So I guess that there is no harm in going for the GTX 570 and I am sure it will be very much beneficial to you.

Even I have a similar problem and even I am confused on whether to switch or not. I am having a GTX 275 with me and even I am thinking to switch to GTX 570.I have a similar screen of 1920x1200 and love to play games. I play games like Crysis, Bad Company 2, Quake 4 and would love to play using GTX 570.So now I am feeling a little bored using the GTX 275 and would like to switch to the new GTX 570 as it would be really exciting to play such games.

According to what you are saying that if your friend keeps that 1440x900 monitor then he isn't going to see the kinds of differences that I saw. Still he should be able to amp AA + AO on everything and the GTX 280 make him to get a bigger monitor whenever he feels like it. But for the GTX 275/GTX 280 to a GTX 570, my best recommendation would be to go without the nVidia's GeForce Optimizer. So in general I feel that you can go ahead with the switch.

I feel that if you both do the switch as you have mentioned then you both are in for about twice the performance of your current cards. So for me it should be a nice switch. Or else one more thing which you can do is that you could go for some new generation nvidia/ati cards. Also as long as your CPU’s are good enough your games should perform smoother. There will be many games which will run smoothly after the switch. I feel that the ID Tech 5 will run amazingly well.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I had a look at the solutions that have been provided and I feel that there is no harm if we both switch from GTX 280 to GTX 570 and vice verse. So I am very happy to know that now I can play with the new GTX 570 instead of playing with the GTX 280.I think that this solution can be useful to those who are also thinking of a similar switch as I am doing. So I would once again like to thank you for all you suggestions that really helped me.
