You are having the desktop computer system which has the Ubuntu operating system and Nvidia GeForce 8800GT graphic card. You are having the choppy video and the CPU usage problem with this desktop computer system. I think the graphic card is not properly installed on the motherboard of the system because of which you are getting this issue.

I think the driver software for the Nvidia GeForce 8800GT graphic card you have installed in the desktop for the Ubuntu operating system is not working properly. So i will advise you to update the drivers for the Nvidia GeForce 8800GT graphic card compatible for the linux based operating system as soon as possible this will resolve the choppy video.

I think there are many processes and the services running in your system from the system start-up because of which the system processor usage goes to 100% and as the result the desktop does not work with the video playback properly. As the result you are getting the choppy videos on the desktop screen. So close the processes which are not usable for you.

This thread is old, but for those encountering choppy Ubuntu video, here is my recent experience for what it is worth. Before you suspect hardware or graphics drivers, read this. Ubuntu 10.4 comes with Movie Player as the default DVD player. This was choppy on a system I was setting up. I clicked on "Applications", then "Ubuntu Software Center", then "Sound and Video". You will find several DVD players on the list. I installed "VLC Media Player" and found it works much better - no stuttering or other problems. System I used was Athlon XP+2200, 512 Mb RAM, GeForce4 440 64MB VGA, fairly low end, with only default drivers installed. If VLC doesn't work for you, maybe one of the other ones will.
