HD is the new standard of television technology. All HDTV is digital, but not all Digital TV is HDTV. Although, digital TV, or DTV sounds similar to HDTV, there are some distinct differences. HDTV offers wide-screen picture viewing with quality similar to 35mm film along with compact disc (CD) sound quality. The best way to understand the differences between HDTV and DTV is to know what they do.

Re: Difference Between Digital TV and HDTV

High Definition Television or HDTV gives a crystal clear, high definition picture and although DTV can also provide a quality picture, it is not as good as HDTV. However, there is one more advantage to the ability of a Digital TV channel's space, the ability to transmit a High Definition (HDTV) signal. Digital Television or DTV refers to a TV signal that is transmitted digitally as opposed to analog. Although an HDTV signal can be described as arriving at a television by the same means as DTV, there is a big difference in the quality of the picture that you will get from HDTV due to it's higher definition.

Re: Difference Between Digital TV and HDTV

Digital TV is TV sent digitally, on carriers that carry a a stream of digital bits which are put together to make digital pictures and sound. Another difference between Digital TV and HDTV is the ability to broadcast programming in a true widescreen (16x9) format. HDTV is just about the resolution of a picture, being 720 lines or greater. With that resolution,, HDTV takes quite a bit of bandwidth, so is only transmitted on digital TV, using video compression.
