nVidia 9 series is basiclly the 8 series in disguise. So go for 4870 and that plays all my games on high settings, and if u got some extra bucks buy the 1gb version.

Read this comment when ATI 4870 was launched,
We've learned that ATI plans to put a lot of pressure on Nvidia as the Radeon HD 4870 will end up faster than the Geforce 9800GTX. This is the card that ATI wants to target with its new performance card and it looks like ATI is the winner in this game.

Well to start with, the HD4870 is superior than the 9800GTX so you should really compare the 9800GTX to the HD4850, with the HD4850 winning by a bit.

In your case, it's all based on your budget now. If you have the money go ahead and get the HD4870. Now if you don't want to spend too much, get the HD4850 which is cheaper, free-shipping as of now and performs just a bit better than the 9800GTX. And don't forget it only takes up 1 slot in your comp.

4870 1GB is worth it. The clock speeds aside (as you can easily set them to match) when you are using higher resolutions and/or AA and AF there will be a noticeable speed difference as these setting you more memory and memory bandwidth. The 1GB model will also allow for more higher resolution textures and less stuttering. So, I recommend you go for the 1GB model. For example GTA4 will benefit from 1GB even on a 22" screen and this is just the beginning, more and more games will start utilizing more VRam. By buying 1GB you'll be future proof.

Nvidia GTX 295 is based on 55nm processor technology, with a core clock set at 648 MHz and shader clock at 1476 MHz, memory size is an old GDDR3 1792 MB and it supports on DirectX version 10.

While ATI Radeon 4870 X2 is also based on 55nm processor technology, with a core clock set at 750 MHz and shader clock at 1600 MHz, memory size is newest GDDR5 2GB and it supports full DirectX version 10.1

In my opinion the Radeon HD 4870 X2 is the better card, and although I may be highly critisized i firmly believe the gtx295 has not got many radical improvements over the gtx280, its basically just a twin gtx280 built on one card, and although the design is like the HD4870 in terms of performance the HD4870 is far superior.

The GTX295 squarely beats everything, in every test, and thats a pre-release sample, with probably lower clocks than the release version, and on immature drivers. The 295 smacks everything else around - but will most likely costs a fair bit more than the 4870x2, so take that into account.

I will say go for the 1Gb card if you can really afford it. 512MB will also be a good option but with 1GB you can have it for more future games.
