Net Framework 1.1 service pack 1 will not install

This is Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 already having net framework 2 installed with Office 2007. Yesterday while running windows update, I saw an update of Net Framework 1.1 service pack 1 with message saying it needed to be installed. The update was downloaded but while trying to install this SP1, I get error SL9B6 and installation gets failed.

All other updates got installed without any problem except this one. I tried restarting PC several times but yet no success. So if it is so important according to the message then why is it not getting installed? What could be the problem? Is it really required to install Net Framework 1.1 SP1 if already having Net Framework 2 on my system?

You should try to perform a standard uninstall first. This tool is not designed as a replacement for uninstall, but rather as a last resort for cases where uninstall or repair did not succeed for unusual reasons. You can download the clean up tool from here http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive...eanup_tool.zip, first run the tool, restart computer and then try installing the update. See if it helps.

Thanks for the help friend. As per your instructions I have downloaded that removal tool but what is the sense of removing Net Framework v2 (latest) and installing (older) Framework 1.1 SP1? Hence I asked whether it is necessary to install this version if the latest one is already installed? Let me also tell you that my system is working fine without any problems.

I think yes, it is necessary because Net framework 1.1 and 2.0 are different products and 2.0 is not a superset of 1.1. Alright, just try out these steps:

• Download and run .NET Framework cleanup tool and cleanup .NET 1.1,or,.NET 2.0 or both.
• Now you reinstall .NET 1.1/[.NET 2.0]
• If you selected .NET 1.1 then reinstall .NET 1.1 SP1
