Windows Explorer has stopped working on Windows Vista Ultimate

I bought a DVD of Windows Vista Ultimate. It has installed it and it is working quiet fine. The system works properly but whenever I copy some file from one folder to another it gives a error that Windows Explorer has stopped working. It gets back to normal after sometime. I cannot move or copy larger files. It appears when I try to move some files from a old partition. Any idea why this is happening. Thanks.

It is a virus issue. I got this error while transferring files from a movies folder. I had copied many things there and somehow it was infected. Whenever I open it crashes explorer with error. The issue only lies with that folder only. Later on I scanned with Norton and found many infections. I had formatted the computer again and installed Vista from scratch. Things started working properly. You can also scan the system in safe mode and then check back.

Explorer.exe is corrupted by virus. Sometime it also due to your video driver. It is necessary that you must run first a driver update and then check back it appears or not. Virus can be the common cause but it is better to go with some troubleshooting and then formatting and re-installing windows from scratch.

It is a clear issue of virus. I am sure you had installed some application or software through which a worm is installed in your system and caused this error. It is very annoying error will not go. You have to format your system completely and install Windows back from scratch. Updating video drivers is not going to help you much. A virus scan can catch the virus but his kind of error is always the last stage where you have to go with the option to format the system completely.

There is one way to fix that. You will need to run SFC /Scannow on from cmd. You can do that in Windows mode also or simply boot your system in safe mode with command prompt. In the black window type the command and then check whether there is any error or not. SFC scans the system and look for invalid system files. If there is improper file in the system it will get replace it. Windows explorer is a important utility. It is actually the interface of Windows and if that fails to work then there is nothing you can do. Another option remains is running system restore and then check once again.

I had got the same type of issues after few days of Vista installation. I had installed a game which came with keygen. After running it, there was a malware in the system which spoiled everything. I got exactly the same error. Windows Explorer fails to work. I tried to restart the system in safe mode, perform system restore but nothing worked out. I am bit doubtful that this is going to fix just like that way. You will need to format your system. You have to install Windows from scratch. That is the only way to deal with problem.

Go in Safe Mode and then remove some newly installed programs. Internet Explorer is spoiled due to changes in system files and it can be fixed by running some good registry repair software. There are number of free software available on the web. You can download and use them.

Does this problem has something associated with Internet explorer also. I am getting the same kind of error on Internet Explorer. When I open some web page and surf for a while it works but after a few time it crashes by giving that IE stopped working error. Is there a link between both the issue and for this also I will have to re-install Vista back from scratch. I do not have the installation dvd, due to which I am not willing to format the system. Is there any other way.

Internet Explorer is a web browser and Windows Explorer is a kind of file manager of Windows. Both are different. You can fix the issue of Internet Explorer by re-installing it. Also there is a small fix provided by Microsoft to deal with the issue. While Windows Explorer when crashes you cannot navigate to any files inside it. To get more details on the error you can look inside Event Viewer. It is located in Control Panel. There you can find the exact issue of cause and then on that basis you can troubleshoot the issue.

Explorer.exe can only be fixed by running startup repair. It is necessary that you run system restore or simply re-install windows back from scratch. At that point you will need to re-update the drivers. There are chances that the folder where you got the error has virus and whenever you open that it spreads back in windows. You must first install a good antivirus update it and then open that folder. If there will any autorun.inf infection it will be blocked.

I checked in Event Viewer where got the appcrash message. There is less chances to get a proper info in that. I had already installed Vista for 3 times and still getting the same error. System restore does not works well here. It looks the there is some serious bug in my hardware and due to which Vista is not at all stable. It is really complicated to find a proper answer for the same.

    Windows Explorer has stopped working

This is a registry error. The edition windows that you are using has some internal file issue. Using a registry fix can give you working solution for sometime, but there is less chances that it works in proper manner. There are some hot fix available on the web. Try to run Windows Update first before installing any software or driver.

re: Windows Explorer has stopped working on Windows Vista Ultimate

    I have posted solution earlier.
there is a program which is not compatible with your windows. So try to find it.
In my case it was FDM (Free Download Manager). I uninstalled it and problem solved. I installed again after a week to confirm and found same result. I tried the same with other systems also and found same result. I downloaded latest version of FDM and installed it with no problem.
