Windows Media Player 11 error 80070005

Hi, as of now I’m having Windows Media Player 10 running on Windows XP SP2. Today I was trying to upgrade the same to WMP v11 but when the download reaches near the end, it stops with an error message saying something it could not be completed because of Error Code 80070005. I tried updating it more than 5 times but every time same result.

    Any idea?

Most probably the error message occurs when the registry permissions on teh following key are probably set wrong:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMPlayer.OCX
    or
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMPlayer.OCX.7

And the most common reason for this is any third party antivirus or antimalware software installed on your computer. You can fix this by deleting or renaming those registry keys.

The WMP11 installer should be able to handle this without you having to worry about it. If it cannot, then you would need to look at the bottom of c:\windows\updspapi.log . That should tell you what registry key modification resulted in "Access is denied". You would need then to give access to that registry key... or at least rename it for the duration of WMP's install. Look for "Error 5" in the updspapi.log.

I was facing exactly the same problem and as mentioned above, I fixed the registry keys and finally I was able complete the installation of WMP 11. But now when trying to configure User Settings, I received the following error message:

"The file wmplayer.exe has a version number of 11.0.5721.5145 where 10.0.0.3646 was expected. Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled."

    What should I do now?

I have been reading a lot of your fixes in hope to get WMP11 working.

Ever since the upgrade to 11 it has never worked.

I have tried you fixes, last one was to change the registry permission on the files you mentioned then
Go to %temp%\ixp000.tmp (or very similar) and *copy the
    wmfdist11.exe files to your desktop*
    * Cancel/shut down the WMP11 setup
    * Directly run wmfdist11.exe from your desktop
Do you get any explicit error messages at that point?

I did not get an error message it just stuck and did nothing when I ran it.

Although I did see an error message relating to it in the install log.

    Latest wmsetup.log

Re: Windows Media Player 11 error 80070005

Normally the error code 80070005 means that you are not having enough permission to install some program in the computer. You may not be having the proper privilege to install that and that is the reason that you are getting the issues like this. You should login as the administrator and then try to install that once again and see if that is showing you the same error message once again. I don’t think that this time that will show that problem to you.
