Cannot uninstall / reinstall / repair WMP 11

I have a Windows XP computer since the release of this operating system, yes from last 9 years. I keep it updated with all security patches and updates. After so long year finally last week my computer got infected with a virus for the first time. Anyhow I managed to cleanup the computer and make everything working normal like before, except Windows Media Player. It crashes as soon as I launch it.

So far I’ve tried many things to fix it but nothing works. Finally I thought to re-install the same hoping it will surely fix the problem but when I run the installer, I get the following error message:

“There is a more recent version of Windows Media Player (11.0.6001.7000) already installed on your computer. It is not possible to use an older installation package (11.0.5721.5146) to install files or to repair your current version of the Player.”

Any idea what could be the problem and how can I get rid of it?

If you look up "WMP11.AssocFile.WMA" on http://support.microsoft.com, you'll find probably the best currently publicly available solution in this venue.

Hey even I am facing a similar problem. In my case if I log in with Admin user account, the system works fine including WMP. And If log with any other user account, the system crashes with this information:

"Windows Media Player has stopped working"

Most probably such problem can occur only when your DRM store is got corrupted and you need to fix it. Just follow the steps provided in this Microsoft KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891664/en-us
