Cannot remove failed 11.0.6001.7000 cannot install new version

This is Windows Vista with Windows Media Player 11. Don’t know why I’m not able to play even MP3 files in the media player anymore. I thought to reinstall WMP to fix the problem but I get an error message saying I cannot install Windows Media Player because I already have the newer version.

Note, I am not trying to update, I am trying to re-install WMP 11 with its setup then why am I getting that error message? Also I dint found any option to uninstall the same hence I directly ran the installer. But as it is getting failed with the error, is there any working fix for the same?

Hello Loeb, instead of asking solution for why you are not able to re-install WMP again (2nd problem), you should be concerned about why you are not able to play MP3 files in Windows Media Player because that is the main problem, right? Anyways, you cannot uninstall Windows Media Player, neither you can install any version over it because you have a newer version already installed. So now, can you five few more details about mp3 files which are not playable in WMP?

Re: Cannot remove failed 11.0.6001.7000 cannot install new version

I have literally done the same and almost removed all traces of Windows Media Player ver 11.0.6001.7000, thinking that i could re-download WMP 11.
I can't because i get the same message too when i do.
I shall attempt a system restore, but if that does not bring everything deleted back, then how do i download Vista again? Will i have to start affresh?

I don’t understand who suggested you guys to remove the traces. If you will remove the traces of WMP it will do damage to your system and you may need to re-install the entire operating system. Am even not sure whether System restore will able able to fix it.

Probably there would be some changes or damage in the system file. You can fix it simply by running “sfc /scannow” in the command prompt. Just make sure to run command prompt as an Administrator.
