According to you will need to match the firmware. As far as I know the same firmware is supposed to work properly on the drives of the different size. Especially in the situation of external vs. embedded ROM but it could not be the issue.

Following things which you can try to fix the matter of yours.
    • You have to replace actuator arm but make sure that it is not preamp.
    • Second thing you can transfer platter on the another maxtor drive.

I have made an observation of preamp was dead then I am sure that AIUI would not be able to communicate through I2C pins. I think the analog part of the pre-amp was dead where as the digital was working quite ok. In case MCU checked for the successful I2C communication with pre-amp before they are driving VCM or spindle motor. I am doubting such kind of problem with the rest of the I2C devices.

You have mentioned that the issue was happened because of the PSU failure so i don’t think so the result of the power supply can cause such a big issue. according to me negative supply on preamp were damaged rather than that of +5V supply. However the above mentioned thing would be useful to affect analog side rather than that of the digital logic.
