RFID Serial Communication with Microcontroller on Desktop

I am developing a RFID based attendance System for my firm as a project and am using ATMEGA8535 microcontroller for processing. I have designed my hardware on a developement kit board. The problem am facing is that I am not able to communicate with my Desktop using serial communication(RS232 cable) as the application is developed in C#.net for displaying the result. Can anyone help me out in this. Below are the tools used for my project.

    Hardware:

    • AVR Development Kit board
    • ATmega8535 Microcontroller
    • RFID Em-18 module

    Software:

    • C#.net
    • SQL Server 2008
