hard drive crash

My hard drive crashed and so I bought another one and have installed it. When I power on my pc the only thing that the screen displays is "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". I have a recovery disc from HP and I can hear my cd drive reading but no matter what button I push nothing happens except the statement is repeated on the screen. Does anybody have any possible solutions that I might be able to try to get my cd drive to read the recovery disc?
