Okay, I'm giving up and heading to a forum dedicated to fixing unexplainable problems. (I hope.)
Okay, where should I start? Back last January my computer has been crashing completely randomly, telling me that I'm getting MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTIONs and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I lost my system restore backups because I moved too much stuff onto my external hard drive. (No seriously, I had a month's worth of backups when I checked, and when I went back to restore, they were gone. Words cannot explain my malcontent towards System Restore.)
Anyway, back on topic. Let's organize this timeline:
-January 30th-ish, my computer starts rebooting at the Windows XP loading screen. Booting into safe mode, then booting up normally, strangely fixes the problem.
-This worked for 2 days, afterwards...strange, things, started happening. Sometimes it froze during bios loadup, (the first screen) sometimes it will power on and then immediately power off.
-Back against the wall, I reinstalled XP. Computer needed it anyway. Problems still persisted, either crashing and rebooting during XP starting up (During the black screen with the XP logo and that cute little blue bar.) or randomly while XP's started up. I even did absolutely nothing at one point and it killed itself. I can conclude that I cannot do something that would bring forth this crash.
-And so begins the tests. I first tested my C:\ drive, no disk errors. I ran memtest86+, no immediate issues. (I only did 2 passes though. I was told once to do 5 but was that really necessary?) I scanned the problem USB drive twice and checked for disk errors, twice, the drive itself is fine. I updated my USB drivers, problems STILL persisted.
-However, the big kicker is--and I'm going to underline this because this is pretty important--is I don't experience these problems in safe mode. It boots fine in safe mode, I have 2 external hard drives, they both crash my computer if I plug in either of them, but they don't do a thing if I plug them in during safe mode. To say this is odd would be an understatement. I'm wondering if you can decipher what this means for me.
I'm at wit's end. I have tested the memory, the disks, scanned for viruses, it's all normal. I'm asking you, fine community, to tell me what I should try to fix.
I can currently think of two options:
-It's the power supply/how I have hooked up my cables. But I wonder if a faulty power supply can not cause problems during safe mode.
-It's the motherboard drivers or usb drivers. I have updated both, however I have not checked if my computer--from a blank slate--would run fine with drivers installed only to restore USB functionality. It's a mystery.
I have used BlueScreenViewer to get to the root of the system crashes, and have uploaded its report for your aid. The errors I have gotten are...quite varied, but hopefully can be put under one general category. If you want a sample before snagging, I've been getting a variety of MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION, UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP, KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Also, most recently, I just received a ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY.
If you need anything else, just give me a ring.
Thanks for your concern.
