Information about Intel X25-M Postville G2

Intel X25-M offers the G2 - code-named "Postville" - to its new generation SSD. With 32-nm MLC NAND, cache and doubling capacity to 320 GB X25-M wants the G2 very fast SSDs from Samsung, OCZ rebuke & Co again. Our benchmark shows how fast the flash drive in the comparison really is. Intel produces chips for its second SSD -generation 34-nm process. Thus requiring our tested 160-gigabyte model of the X25-M G2 Postville only ten MLC NAND chips. In the first X25-M-generation, which debuted in August 2008, are required for 80 GB of capacity for 20 in the 50-nm-process-made chips. The Postville SSD achieved with the 34-nm chips a maximum sequential read rate of 254 Mbytes / s. It is therefore, only minimally above the 252 MB / s of the X25-M. When writing allows the X25-M G2 in sequential mode, a maximum of 82 MByte / s - also only slightly more than the first generation with 77 MByte / s.

In zone letter is Intel's second generation SSD thus remains well behind the competition, with the MLC NAND write values of up to 238 MByte / s ( OCZ Series reach). In practical operation, the results reflect only partially: in the typical reading operation with files of varying sizes reach the X25-M G2 a peak of 107 Mbytes / s (previous 90 MB / s). The Postville SSD provides for SYSmark2007 Preview for top ranking in system performance. Here comes the 34-nm-SSD benefits increased from 16 to 32 MB cache. The larger data buffer helps the X25-M G2 but also for writing and copying of files of varying sizes, however, models like OCZ and Samsung 256GB MLC SSD here much faster.

Intel uses the X25-M G2 developed in the SSD controller PC29AS21BA0. The chip controls over ten parallel channels of the NAND memory ICs. To buffer the data comes in the Postville SSD now a 32-MB SDRAM cache type Micron MT48LC16M16A2P-75 IT instead of the previous 16-Mbyte SDRAMs from Samsung to use. Intel's X25-M is G2 with 80 GB of capacity available at online retailers for around 195 euros. The 160-gigabyte version is for about 380 euros, which will shortly available 320-gigabyte model for about 900 euro (Stand: 14.09.09) available.

The jump to the top is Intel's second SSD X25-M-generation G2 "Postville" denied. The competition is made not more as in the presentation of the first X25-M in the shade. Its special strength is playing from the new MLC NAND drive when reading files - whether streaming or a mixture of files of varying sizes. When writing lags the Postville SSD also the MLC NAND-based competition are sometimes two. In the typical daily operation, this deficit does, however, less noticeable, as the achieved very good performance with the X25-M G2 occupied.

The Solid state disks with the best value for money is one of the Corsair Storage Solution P128 for about 280 € in addition to currently Samsung's 256GB MLC SSD . Besides the high sequential transfer rates when reading and writing over 200 MByte / s shows the Samsung SSD , especially in practical operation, a top performance. The 256-gigabyte model costs about 500 euro for the 128-gigabyte version is about 270 € payable (as of: 14.09.09). Also on the performance level of the Samsung SSD act OCZ Series and the Super Talent drive me . During the 120-gigabyte model will cost about Vertex 310 euros, there is the 128-gigabyte version of the ultra drive me already for 250 euro (as of: 14.09.09). Both SSDs deliver sequential read and write rates of about 240 MByte / s. Also convincing in the practice tests that SSDs with a successful Controller-/Cache-Combination.
