New Router or External Hard Drive?

    Hello everyone,

I need to add an external hard drive in my home. This external hd needs to sit on its own and cannot be connected to a pc at all times. My question is, would it better to purchase a new router with USB storage built in? or buy an external hard drive that has a network interface? Either way, i want the HD to be on the network. Any suggestions on this are welcome. Thanks.

I think it is not possible to view your external hard drive on network because USB drive is device which is not able to run the ethernet converter. So even if you have connected the USB/ethernet connection all together then too devices at each end does not know what to do with the device at the another end. For the purpose you wish to do, You have to buy a Network Attached Storage device (NAS) with both USB port and an ethernet port.
