Does 500GB Hard Disk slow down our computer

Presently, My system have a 2GB RAM,P4 with 3.0GHz. I am planning to buy a 500GB HD. If i use a 500GB hard Disk then will it slow down my computer? What would be the cost of the portable 500GB Hard Disk? I would really appreciate some help here.

As you said you have a 2GB RAM,3.0GHz, so i dont think it will slow down your pc. An internal Hard Disk might be better. If you need for backup and portability, an external one would be preferable. But remember one thing, the big external drives need a separate power supply. There are 2 types of portables, small ones that have a 2.5" laptop hard disk and big ones that have 3.5" deskptop hard disks. The smaller ones dont need an external power supply but these are very costlier. I suggest you to get an internal 500gb hard disk. But if you feel that an external one would be better, you can buy a hard disk which you can use it as an external drive connecting to usb.

Can you tell me whats the size of your current hard disk? If its above 80GB or more than that, then you can go for the external one. If you buy an external hard drive then you will not have an issue of system slow down. For downloading purpose you just maintain a drive of say 40 GB on current HD. So in future when it fills, you can simply transfer all the data at once, to the external HD. A portable 500 GB one would cost around Rs.8000 whereas the internal would cost you around Rs.3000.

I dont think that putting a 500GB disk could be a problem. A portable 500GB drive should cost around 4200 rupees. I suggest you to get an internal 500Gb one for WD / Seagate. USB interface is definitely slower than IDE/SATA , i dont think it will slow down your PC . And, if you are looking for an internal drives, then go for the new 7200.12 series which is very fast and good drive, try this you will get a good performance.

Actually, Hard Disk Slows down your PC Performance but there are many free Optimizer that can optimizes the hard disk to improve Data Access Times and thus speedup the PC's Performance. Also, I dont understand whether you have a 352 ram installed only or are you talking about something else. Can you tell us your full computer specifications in details?

Most of the emachines come preinstalled with AMD Sempron Processor that also features a 500GB hard drive. And there is not any trouble about any speed with the hard drive. Incase if there is low memory or ram in the system then sometimes while copying data's on the hard drive the system might get slow. However it is recommended that the windows installation drive should be free atleast by 25% that will help not to slow down the booting times.
