Mac OS X - External hard drive error 36

    Hi,

When I try to copy windows files on my macintosh pc. I can't copy files on to one of the partitions. when I try to do so, I get the error message: the finder could not complete the operation because some data in XYZ could not be read or written. (error code -36). I tried to replicate the problem again in MAC by deleting the file that has caused the error in MAC and recopying again using macbook,, and same error. Any clues as to what this is trying to tell me?

Check NTFS formatted hard disk WD ... You can check the information area of the Disk Utility. That will cause your problem, because the Mac can not save or modify any file on your hard disk. Microsoft does not provide easy access to NTFS partitions from other operating systems.

Are you moving large video files (over 4GB)? If the drive is formatted not NTFS but is formatted FAT32, then there is a file size limitation - nothing to do with your Mac You may not copy any file that is larger than 4 GB on that drive.

It is an error -36 input / output error, that I was alone when my hard drive is corrupted error is a low-level system obtains Path Finder as a response to his attempt to copy the file. Do not know why Finder does not have any problems, but I suggest you check your hard drive with an excellent repair program (no idea what would be on Windows, Mac is usually something like Disk Warrior, etc)

Try the following steps to remove error 36 :

    1. Right click on the drive your copying to.

    2. Select Get Info

    3. Click on privileges
    find Read/Write
    Read
    Write

then click the little pad lock in the right corner of the info box at the bottom and add your password. Make sure you have have read/write added or write permission.

I found a simple solution. mine was ntfs.
I had a particular folder of videos on an external HD that kept getting error - 36 on the mac and didnt work on anything.

I plugged it into a pc and went - start - run.

    chkdsk E: /f

    (E: was my external hdrive)
you may have to start in safe mode first but it worked.
    drive works fine on everything.
