When you go to Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, do you have a device listed next to the speaker icon?? Check the speakers. Use external headphones, if the headphones are working properly, means the speakers of Laptop are damaged.
Click on Start and select Run in run windows type devmgmt.msc, it will open a window which will display information about sound driver, Check if the sound driver is not installed or has been disabled and also Go to Control Panel>Hardware and Audio>Device Manager Check and see if you have a yellow warning sign in front of Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
If you can hear sound through the headphones then you would then be able to say that you have a software/driver problem and also uninstalled the additional sound device and restarted the acer aspire 4520.
