Access Denied Error with CD Sharing

I have a server setup of Windows Vista Ultimate with Windows XP and I am able to share external drives and printer sharing on server but if I try to access the CD Drive although it is recognized by the remote server I am getting error message of "Access Denied"? I dont know why I am not able to access the CD drive although everything is working fine? Can anyone suggest some remedies for this problem. Thank you

Re: Access Denied Error with CD Sharing

There are 2 registry entries in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\ WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon subkey:

    Code:
    AllocateCDRoms:REG_SZ
    AllocateFloppies:REG_SZ
One or both of these entries has been added and/or set to 1, thus disabling access to everyone but the locally logged on user.

    1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) and select the following subkey:
    Code:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\
       CurrentVersion\Winlogon

       AllocateCDRoms:REG_SZ
       AllocateFloppies:REG_SZ
    2. Change the value for these entries to 0 or remove the entry.

Have you enabled or disabled Simple File Sharing? I think with Vista some people have had trouble (probably with permissions) sharing a drive, but you have XP, right? It's not possible to write to the remote optical drive, but I don't recall another such read access issue.

It simply means that there is a permission issues if you encounter a Access Denied error message. It might be also possible that there maybe a bad IDE cable or wrong jumper settings on the drives? In case you are logged in with administrative permissions, then you shouldn't have that problem unless something with the permissions in the relevant registry branches is messed up for whatever reason.
