ATA (UDMA) 66/100/133 modes of operation require the new cables that have 80 conductors , ATAPI-5, ATAPI-6, and ATAPI-7 , Remember hard drives using the ATA (UDMA) 66/100/133 modes of operation require the new cables that have 80 conductors in the ribbon, 40 of which are used to shield the others from electromagnetic interference.

ATA 1 to 4 Standards use cables to connect 40-pin while the new ATA-5 standard uses a new 80-pin cable. Both cables plug into the motherboard, but you need a newer motherboard to take advantage of the ATA-5. The new ATA-5 cables can be used with the standard ATA-4 (UltraDMA)

ATA-5: Also developed by Quantum, and known to UltraDMA66 or UltraATA/66, it requires a cable 80-pin that plugs into the same connector than the old 40-pin standard ATA 40-pin. The additional 40 pins allow transfer rates without generating higher signal to noise ratio, resulting in loss of data.
