i think in windows Win98SE HP LaserJet P1006 is not supported so check in manual for supported operating system for printer if Printer is made to support greater version then you probably unable to work on windows xp.
All USB printers need the manufacture drivers installed before printer plugged in pc so check win98 driver in hps driver disk .Search in Device Manager with the printer plugged in and powered on you can find an unknown device.Delete this unknown device and unplug the printer.restart pc and run the 98 installer from the hp driver cd.that will ask you to plug in the printer at some point connect it and complete..
Did you check for the 'add port' button after the LPT1 install? as it will install the printer on LPT1 using the Add Printer wizard. Also checked in Device Manager while the printer is connected for unknown devices with yellow mark . If an unknown device you found there then go to properties>driver>update driver and brows to 9x driver CD.If it correctly installs the driver every thing will works..
I thought my adventure may help someone. I did get the printer to work using WIN Me. First, I had the install cd but I also found it online on cnet the file size 198mb called: hp_LJ_P1005_P1505_Full_Solution_ROW.exe. The path you want to follow is \pcl5 Drivers\9x\enww there you will find the ini file you will need for a manual install. Ignore the the folder W9X. Ok, one last thing to do. You must not let windows install any driver it says you should use. You will have to select the printer, but not the P1006 the script has an error and I did not feel like debugging it, so I used P1005. It worked. I hope this helps. I think if you are using 98se this will work to if you install a usb drivers to install the usb001 printing port. The usb ini file is on the disk too. I found it in the W9X folder.
