Try other software to check temperature (eg: everest home edition) also would be also possible that your sensor for temperature recording is not functioning properly.
50 - 55 ° C with a HDD, that's huge. Disks according to many manufacturers should not exceed 45 ° C warm. Build times the additional fan in your PC. My Samsung and Western Digital My run with just about 35 ° C.
It was probably due to the thermodynamic instability of the bits to do. 40 degrees outside does not mean forty degrees inside, but much more. Today's hard drives are already pretty close to the super paramagnetic limit, which means that magnetic bits have a greater tendency simply through the room to switch. Even the write-read, a complicated GMR layer, a higher temperature is obviously not good.
generally temps shud be less than 40°C
anything beyond 45°C isnt good.
though i have a old samsung 80gb sata running at 47°C it has satrted developing bad sectors and temps on inc. as time passes.
According to me your hard disk temperature must remain within 30 to 40 degree. In Windows, my hard drive normally reads a temperature of about 42C, but in Ubuntu, my hard disk temperature rarely exceeds 36C.
