Maxtor 60GB hard disk not recognized, is it broken

I have a Maxtor 60GB hard disk that I put in a box as an external hard disc for several months. I connected this afternoon and had an error in writing, so I stopped and then removed, and then I re-lit, the disc drive no longer recognized, while the case was usb Detection (I can "disconnect the usb device") but I see no disc in the workplace.

I removed the box and reconnected directly to the PC, such not recognized, so it's not just housing. However, when I connect the disc, I hear the disc and start a good inside running, as if he was ok.

So what is it is a formatting problem? Something that was circulated by "software"? or something that was circulated at hardware? (firmware, etc.)

Is there a way to see where exactly is the problem?

If it is no longer detected in the bios check the jumpers, I guess it's IDE. if the jumpers are properly configured and it is still not recognized in bios you have burned your pcb, your hard drive is dead

If it is not recognized in the bios, we can not do miracles.

There might be hope if you replaced the PCB with another from a disc of the same model (it's simple to change, provided they have the right screwdriver).

If not "working" it means that is not recognized by the bios? it is on? it is a formatting problem or mistake disc?

and What is PCB? the PCB below the disc?
