New External Hard Drive problem on Windows Xp

Hey Everyone,

I'm running Windows Xp on my system. Recently i have bought two new external hard drives which i have connected through USB cable. I cannot find external hard drive icon listed under hardware shown in My Computer when i try to connect it through my desk top. Can any one provide me the solution for the above problem? Would be grateful to you if any one help me out to resolve the above issue.

You just try to check it in disk management and see if the system is seeing the drive and what drive letter is assigned. Windows tries to assign the next drive letter, even if it's already assigned to something. If you see the drive in Disk Management, then just assign it to a different drive letter and you can be able to access it.

Try to see your drive in Device Manager, did you notice any yellow exclamation or question mark sign next to your USB device? If you did you might not have the correct drivers.

As a troubleshooting measure, disconnect all USB devices, connect the external hard drive and reboot.

You can also check your new external hard drive in to your BIOS. Check out whether your BIOS can detect it or not.
